Flu vaccination has started – Protect yourself in time!
The vaccination campaign for the 2025/2026 flu season has begun.
Vaccinations are being administered at public health institutions across the country, specifically at public health centers and their branch offices.
At the Institute for public health, flu vaccinations are provided for healthcare workers in the city of Skopje.
To increase the availability of the flu vaccine in Skopje, the Health Center – Skopje has also joined the vaccination campaign, with vaccination points open at the following locations: Polyclinic "Bucharest", Polyclinic "Bit Pazar" and Polyclinic "Idadija".
The vaccine is free for high-risk groups, which include:
· Individuals over 65 years old
· People with chronic illnesses (asthma, heart disease, kidney disease, diabetes, metabolic disorders, neurological conditions, immune disorders, cancer)
· Children aged 6 months to 5 years
· Pregnant women
· Healthcare workers
What is the flu and why is protection important?
The flu is an acute infectious disease caused by the influenza virus, which primarily affects the upper respiratory tract (nose and throat) and, in more severe cases, the bronchi.
While the disease typically resolves relatively easily for most people, it can cause serious complications for certain groups, leading to hospitalization or even death.
The flu spreads easily through coughing or sneezing, as well as by touching contaminated objects. Symptoms usually appear 1 to 4 days after infection, and an infected person can transmit the virus before symptoms appear.
The illness usually begins suddenly, with:
· High fever
· Headache and fatigue
· Muscle and joint pain
· Sore throat and dry cough
· Runny nose and tears
In most people, symptoms subside within about a week, but in high-risk groups, complications such as pneumonia, inflammation of the heart muscle or brain, and even death can occur.
Why should we get vaccinated?
Vaccination is the most effective and safest way to protect against the flu and its complications. Every year, the vaccine is adjusted to match the circulating strains of the virus and offers the best possible protection for the upcoming season.
The Institute for public health urges all citizens, especially those in high-risk groups, to get vaccinated against the flu on time.
