INTERNATIONAL HUMAN RIGHTS DAY – 10 DECEMBER 2025

Human rights must never come second to power or profit, says the UN Secretary-General, calling for a united stance against injustice.

The message from the Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, for 10 December 2025, focuses on “Human Rights: Our everyday essentials.”

Nearly 80 years ago, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) defined what every person needs to survive and thrive. It was a philosophical and political breakthrough—and since then has formed the foundation of our global community.

Human rights—civil, political, economic, social, and cultural—are inalienable, indivisible, and interdependent. Yet in recent years, we have seen shrinking civic spaces.

Serious violations continue to signal blatant disregard for rights and callous indifference to human suffering.

Together, we have the power to confront these injustices by protecting the institutions that make human rights a living reality.

Every day, the United Nations helps people around the world realize their most fundamental rights. Together with civil society and governments, we deliver food and shelter; support education and elections; clear landmines; protect the environment; advocate for women’s empowerment; and work towards peace.

But we cannot do this alone. This work depends on everyone, everywhere, taking a stand. When we protect the most vulnerable, refuse to look away, and speak up for the institutions that speak for us, we keep human rights alive.

Our rights must never come second to profit or power. Let us unite to defend them—for the dignity and freedom of all.

The story of Human Rights Day

The creation of Human Rights Day is rooted in the aftermath of World War II. The global community was determined to prevent such atrocities from happening again. In response, the United Nations was formed, and one of its first major achievements was drafting the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR).

This groundbreaking document was a collaborative effort, with representatives from diverse legal and cultural backgrounds from all regions of the world. It was adopted by the UN General Assembly in Paris on 10 December 1948 as a common standard of achievement for all peoples and nations. For the first time, it established fundamental human rights as universally protected. Annual observance of Human Rights Day on 10 December was formally established by the UN General Assembly in 1950.

Recognizing ongoing struggles

Although significant progress has been made since 1948, human rights violations continue around the world. Human Rights Day provides a platform to draw attention to these issues. It highlights the struggles of people facing oppression, discrimination, and violence, and mobilizes support for their causes.

What is the purpose of Human Rights Day?

Human Rights Day serves as a reminder of the basic rights and freedoms that belong to every individual, regardless of race, gender, nationality, or background. It raises awareness of these rights and encourages actions that uphold human dignity and equality worldwide.

Upholding universal values

This day reinforces the universal values of equality and non-discrimination. It reminds us that every person, wherever they live or whoever they are, deserves respect. These rights are not granted by any state; they are inherent to our humanity.

Promoting awareness and education

A key aim of Human Rights Day is to raise awareness about the UDHR and its principles. Many people are unaware of their fundamental rights. By promoting education, we empower individuals to claim their rights and defend the rights of others. Events, campaigns, and educational programs held on this day help spread this vital knowledge.

How you can get involved

Participating in Human Rights Day can be as simple as sharing information with friends or actively organizing community events. Every action, no matter how small, contributes to building a culture of respect and dignity.

Who organizes Human Rights Day activities?

Activities for Human Rights Day are coordinated by governments, NGOs, human rights groups, and individuals committed to promoting equality and justice. Many UN bodies also host events and campaigns to mark the occasion.

Ways you can make a difference:

  1. Educate yourself and others
Start by reading the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, available in over 500 languages. Share what you learn with family, friends, and on social media. Understanding your rights is the first step toward defending them.
  2. Support Human Rights Organizations
Many organizations work tirelessly to defend human rights globally. Consider donating or volunteering with groups such as Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, or the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights. Even small contributions can make a big impact.
  3. Speak out against injustice
Use your voice to oppose discrimination and injustice in your community. This can be through social media, writing to local representatives, or participating in peaceful protests. When you see rights being violated, do not remain silent.
  4. Participate in local events
Look for Human Rights Day events in your area, such as workshops, film screenings, art exhibitions, or public lectures. Attending these events is a great way to connect with like-minded people and learn more about current human rights issues.
  5. Promote kindness and respect
Practice the principles of the UDHR in your daily life. Treat everyone with kindness, respect, and empathy. Simple acts of compassion help create a more inclusive and peaceful society for all.
