Protection of children and young people from the harmful effects and consequences of smoking

Today, on 18 December 2025, a public hearing entitled “Protection of children and young people from the harmful effects and consequences of smoking” was held at the Assembly of the Republic of Macedonia, organized by the Committee on Health.

The Institute of Public Health was represented by its delegates, who actively participated and addressed Members of Parliament, as well as representatives of institutions and civil society organizations.

The results of the Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS 2024), conducted with the support of the World Health Organization, were presented. These results indicate a concerning increase in the use of new tobacco and nicotine products among young people, as well as increased exposure to secondhand smoke.

It was emphasized that urgent and decisive action is needed to protect children and young people from the influence of the tobacco industry.

Recommendations included the adoption of comprehensive regulation covering all tobacco and nicotine products, increased excise taxes, mandatory education in schools, continuous media campaigns, and strict enforcement of smoke-free legislation.

Protecting the health of younger generations is an investment in the future of our country.
